Accurately assess your motor, visual and cognitive abilities using driving simulators, with the assistance and guidance of physiotherapists and specialized technicians.
What can you do at Mobility Centers?
Test the recommended adaptations on a specially equipped vehicle, together with a driving instructor.
Receive a certificate to present to the Medical Commission of your Local Health Authority, to simplify the process of obtaining a special driving license.
Driving simulators
The driving simulator allows you to safely assess your motor, visual, and cognitive abilities and become familiar with the assistive devices that may be fitted to your vehicle.
Thanks to sensors and advanced technologies, the test reproduces realistic driving conditions and allows you to try a traditional pedal set or manual controls such as the “Push & Pull” system.
At the end, you will receive a full assessment of your performance.
Special driving license
A special driving license is a driving license issued to people who have physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations but are nevertheless fit to drive with adaptations. At Autonomy Mobility Centers, you can obtain a certificate required to present to the Local Medical Commission that will handle the issuance of your special driving license.
How do you get it? Here is the procedure for obtaining one.
To obtain it, you must undergo an examination at your Local Medical Commission (there is at least one in every province).
You can book the fitness examination through the secretariat of the Local Medical Commission for driving licenses or through driving schools. During the assessment, the Commission evaluates fitness to drive on the basis of the documentation submitted and the person’s functional condition. If the outcome is positive, a medical report is issued for the purpose of obtaining a driving license, valid for 6 months, specifying any mandatory vehicle adaptations required. Within this period, you may apply to obtain or reclassify your driving license at the offices of the Civil Motorization Office.
After receiving confirmation of fitness to drive and obtaining your learner’s permit, you can prepare for the theoretical and/or practical examinations.
If you are obtaining the license, you must take both the theoretical and practical examinations. In the case of license reclassification (usually for those who already hold a license), you will instead need to take only the practical driving test.
During the practical exam on the modified vehicle, the Civil Motorization Office examiner may confirm the planned adaptations or prescribe additional ones. The special license will specify the final adaptations that you will have to use on your vehicle. The testing of adapted vehicles is carried out by the Civil Motorization Office at the workshops that handled the vehicle conversion.
The special driving license is valid for 5 years, but it may require more frequent renewal based on the Medical Commission’s recommendations.
You must contact the Provincial Medical Commission at least 90 days before your license expires.
How do you file an appeal?
A candidate can only be deemed unfit by the Local Medical Commission following a medical examination.
If this happens and you believe that the assessment was inadequate, you can file an appeal within 30 days of the refusal and request, at your own expense, a new medical examination at an RFI Territorial Health Unit (Italian Railway Network). For up-to-date information on appeal procedures, we recommend consulting the official guidelines or contacting the offices of the Civil Motorization Office or the driving schools specializing in special driving licenses.
