A climb toward autonomy with Vanni Oddera and Riccardo Aldighieri

In this episode of Storie da raccontare, Vanni Oddera takes Riccardo Aldighieri rock climbing, showing that we all have “an extra gear.” Born with cerebral palsy, which does not allow him to walk independently, Riccardo has never stopped believing in himself despite difficulties that are not only physical, but above all social — navigating relationships with his peers. During the journey to the destination, Riccardo confesses that his relationship with driving is fundamental: being able to cover long distances in total autonomy, safety and without effort is like walking. His advice to those who feel overwhelmed by difficulties? Learn to turn your weaknesses and your fears into your strengths.

[Vanni Oddera and Riccardo Aldighieri get into a FIAT 500. Riccardo takes the wheel and drives along mountain roads.]

[00:11]

Vanni: Riccardo, ready to go?

[00:13]

Riccardo: Let’s go.

[00:14]

Vanni: How would you describe yourself in two words?

[00:16]

Riccardo: I’d describe myself as a trap disabled guy. You know, I like living a bit over the top, pushing the limits, sometimes even showing off.

[00:24]

Vanni: How long have you been living with your disability?

[00:28]

Riccardo: I was born with this disability. It’s cerebral palsy, which doesn’t allow me to walk independently due to a brain injury affecting the motor area.

[00:39]

Vanni: What’s your relationship with driving?

[00:41]

Riccardo: For me, being able to travel long distances completely on my own, safely, and without effort—Vanni, that’s like walking independently for me.

[00:51]

Vanni: Is there something you’d like to say to those who feel discouraged and overwhelmed by difficulties?

[00:56]

Riccardo: Learn to turn your weaknesses and your fears into your strengths, because I believe we can all crush it!

[01:04]

Vanni: So far you’ve been driving me, but now, Riccardo, come with me—I’ll take you somewhere.

[01:05–01:30]

[Riccardo and Vanni continue the experience outdoors. They are seen tackling a trekking route that goes through a cave and then along a via ferrata.]
